So What’s the First Step to Creating a Website that Makes Money?
After you decided to build a website, the question you’re probably asking is, ” what should my website be about?”
This is Step Two: How to Choose Your Niche.
First of all, what exactly is a niche?
Simply put, it’s something that people are interested in and search for. A niche can be a product, service, or information that people are looking for. The best niches should be focused and refined.
There are two ways you can go about choosing a niche for your website.
- You can choose a niche that is popular or is highly profitable.
- You can choose a niche that you have a passion for, or enjoying talking about.
If you think that choosing option 1 is the best because you can make the most money, think again. If you choose a highly profitable or popular niche that you have absolutely no interest in, you are shooting yourself in the foot. Writing about a niche that you have no interest or passion in is very, very difficult.
If you don’t know anything about the niche you choose, you will have to spend a lot of time researching it so you can write good content for your website. If you don’t have a interest in it, you WILL NOT ENJOY this.
You’ll get bored and frustrated quickly, which will kill your motivation. This will lead to you stop working on your website and eventually quit…..and if you quit, you get NO MONEY. Believe me, I learned this lesson the hard way.
However, if you are a good marketer and don’t mind researching and writing about a topic that you don’t know much about, go for it. Although I still highly recommend option 2. Choosing a niche that you have a passion, interest, or knowledge in.
If you choose option 2, you’ll have a much easier time writing about it because well…you already know about it and enjoy your topic! It is possible that you might not make as much money as other niches (if you have a rare or unique hobby or passion), but guess what? If you hate what you do and quit, you’ll make no money. If you write about what you love and have fun with it, you WILL make money.
The great thing about the Internet is that there are so many people out there, ANY niche that you choose can make money.
However, there is one criteria you should keep in mind when choosing a niche.
Don’t make it too broad.
What do I mean by this? For example, if you want to start a website about sports, you’ll probably won’t have too much success. This is because “sports” is too broad. If you search for “sports” in Google, you’ll get results related to sports news, sports scores, and even information about the word “sport.”
You’ll need to focus your niche to something more specific. How about choosing a sport? Let’s say golf. Well, golf is more specific, so it’s a better niche than “sports.” However, “golf” is still a very broad topic. What aspect of golf do you want to talk about?
Maybe you want to talk about golf clubs. Or how about the best golf courses in the world? Maybe you want to write about ways to lower your golf score. The niche “how to lower your golf score” would make for a great website. You could write a lot about that niche and definitely make money by doing so.
When it comes to making money online, the name of the game is knowledge. The good thing about this is that EVERYONE has it. There must be at least one thing in your life that you know a lot about. Maybe it’s your job, or a hobby that you have.
Here’s a great tutorial and training video about how to pick a niche:
A Important Thing to Keep In Mind:
Remember that you’ll be writing about your niche on your website. You don’t have to be a professional writer to do this. You just need to write things that will help or educate people who come to your website.
You’ll also be promoting products that are related to the niche you pick. For example, using our “how to lower your golf score” niche, we might promote products like new hi-tech golf clubs or gloves that can be bought online. You can provide information about these products and then put in links that people can click on to buy it.
Maybe these links will take them to Amazon.com, where they can purchase the product. If someone buys a product after clicking on your link, you’ll get a percentage of the sale. This is called Affiliate Marketing. I’ll be talking more about this later.
Think about what niche you would like to focus on. If you don’t have any idea about what niche to choose, there are some things you can do.
First, think about what you like doing? Any hobbies or interests? Or maybe there is something that you are an expert in.
If you can’t think of any, think about the last 5 things you searched the Internet for. Did you look for a certain product? Could that product be used for your niche? Or did you search for information online?
If that doesn’t help, you can go to www.dmoz.com. This is an online directory that you can browse through to get ideas for your niche.
