By now you should have chosen a passion/theme for your website and got your domain name and hosting all set up. If you chose a theme that you have a passion or interest in, you probably have a million things that you could write about. However, if you don’t know what to write about, don’t worry. This article will point you in the right direction and help you find things to talk about on your website.
What Should I Write About?
Whether you have too many ideas or none at all, the first thing you want to do is research. Don’t let that scare you off. This research is not hard at all, and it actually pretty fun. It’s called “keyword research.”
What’s a Keyword?
Have you ever searched for something on the Internet? I’m pretty sure you have. Well the word or words that you searched for are keywords. Things like “how to get free chocolate” or “why does my wife always make me sleep on the couch” are all keywords.
Google is by far the most popular search engine in the world. As of December 2014, Google had a little more than 66% of the market share. There are 3.5 BILLION searches powered by Google EVERY DAY. No matter what your website is about, someone out there is probably searching for it. So if we get ranked highly with Google, we can bring lots of traffic to our website.
Why Are Keywords Important?
Keywords are important because they tell you what your audience is searching for. You could write the best content in the world, but if no one searches for it, then it is meaningless. You want to know what people are searching for and then write content that relates to their search.
For example, if people are searching for the keywords, “how to build muscle quickly,” you could write about many things related to these keywords. You could write about which exercises are the best, proper technique, nutrition, exercise equipment, book reviews, etc. There are usually many things you can write about for any given set of keywords. Just use your imagination and think about what your audience wants, and what kind of information will help them. If you searched for “how to build muscle quickly,” what kind of information would you be looking for?
Keywords = Traffic = Money
Choosing the right keywords can lead to many people visiting your website. Usually the more traffic you have coming to your website, the more money you can make. Why is this? We’ll go more into detail about making money with your website in future lessons, but basically, a website is just like a physical store. More customers in your store = more potential sales.
When you write good content that provides value, people will come to trust you and take your advice. This can lead to sales for you.
If you wrote content for the keywords “best exercises for building muscle fast,” you could recommend the equipment needed for each exercise. For example, you could talk about a certain exercise, like dumbbell rows for your back. That exercise requires dumbbells, so you could put in an affiliate link taking that visitor to a place where they can buy the equipment you recommend. If that person buys anything, you’ll get a percentage of the sale. This is how affiliate marketing works.
How Do I Know Which Keywords Are Good, and Which Are Bad?
Choosing the right keywords can be a challenge at times. If you choose keywords that few people search for, then you can get ranked in Google easily because of the low competition. While getting ranked highly in Google (top 1-5 search results) is definitely a good thing, you still need people to search for those keywords. Something like “how to sleep while hula hooping” might get you ranked easily, but I doubt you’ll get many visitors searching for that.
On the other hand, if you choose keywords that have a lot of competition, you might not get ranked at all. You could be on the 50th page of the Google search results, which is pretty much the same as not being ranked at all. No one will find your website that way.
So just like Goldilocks and the 3 bears, you want to find keywords that are not too competitive, not too “unique,” but just right. That’s where keyword research comes into play.
How to Do Keyword Research
A very simple way to keyword research is by using Google. Just type in the words you want to search and see how many results come up. I usually use quotation marks when searching. If you put quotation marks on your keywords (ex: “my keywords”), Google will bring up web pages that have an EXACT match for those keywords. I usually go for keywords than have less than 5,000 results.
Jaaxy – Premium Keyword Platform
There is a big problem using this method though. You don’t know how many people visit these sites and if they can get your ranked easily or not. Using Google is free, and I do use this method quite often. However, if you want to get ranked in the shortest amount of time, I recommend paying for a keyword researching tool. One of the best keyword researching tools out there now is called Jaaxy.
Jaaxy doesn’t just give you the exact match webpage results. It tells you the quality of the keywords you are searching for based on traffic and competition, which will you to tell if you can get ranked in Google easily or not. It is also web based, which means you don’t need to install any programs and you can access it from any computer around the world. Jaaxy also gives you suggestions for similar keywords and will tell you if the domain name is available for that keyword.
Jaaxy is a paid service, but you can sign up for free with just an e-mail address (no credit card needed) and get 30 free searches. 30 searches is enough to get you started writing good content for good keywords. I highly recommend it. You can try out Jaaxy below. Remember that you’ll need to register to see your results.
Wealthy Affiliate Keyword Tool
What I have been using the most lately is the keyword research tool in Wealthy Affiliate. Wealthy Affiliate is an online community and training resource that I highly recommend if you want to be successful making money online. I wrote a detailed review about it here: My Wealth Affiliate Review. You can sign up for free and use many of their services, but the keyword research tool is only available to premium members. The Wealthy Affiliate keyword tool is okay for basics searches, but Jaaxy is much, much better. The Wealthy Affiliate keyword tool is good for getting started, but you’ll probably want to use Jaaxy when you start writing more content.
If you want to have a successful website that makes money, finding the right keywords to target can make or break you. At the very least, finding the right keywords and speed up the process of getting ranked in the search engines like Google. This will lead to you getting more traffic in a shorter amount of time. So I definitely recommend you use a keyword research tool. The good ones do cost money, but it’s worth it to save you time and heartache.
But Remember That The Most Important Thing You Can Do Is…
Write good content! Start writing as soon as possible and don’t stop! Don’t get hung up and spend all of your time researching for the “perfect” keyword. Investing some time to keyword research is the best, but don’t forget that the heart and soul of your website if your content. So if you have a few ideas but are struggling to find the best keywords for it, JUST START WRITING. Any content that you publish is a million times more powerful than thinking of keywords and not getting anything done. You can always go back and revise your work, so publish your content and get it out to the world!
